Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu while in Eldoret announcing the results, he said that a total of 48,174 candidates attained an E grade in 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE. It was confirmed that more candidates scored an E grade in 2023 KCSE exams in comparison to that of 2022. It indicates a significant increase from 30, 822 candidates who got an E in 2022, translating to 56% increase.
“Compared to the previous year, we have observed a significant uptick in the number of students securing an E grade.” he said.
From the further analysis of the KCSE results, 201,133 candidates attained grades of c+ and above and they meet direct university’s entry.
“The number of candidates who attained the minimum university entry qualification (Grade C+ and above) was 201,133 (22.27%) in the year 2023 KCSE Examination compared to 173,345 (19.62%) in the year 2022. This is as a result of the application of a new grading system,” Machogu said.
Out of 201, 133 candidates who scored c+ and above, 1, 216 candidates attained straight As making a slight increase from the 1,146 candidates who scored A grade in 2022.
” There were 1,216 (0.14%) candidates who obtained an overall grade of A in the 2023 KCSE Examination compared to 1,146 (0.13%) candidates in the year 2022,” Machogu said.
However CS Ezekiel Machogu said that the Ministry of Education would not release the results of 4000 students who had cases of exam irregularities.
“Results of the remaining 4,109 candidates who were suspected to have engaged in examination irregularities have been withheld pending the completion of investigations into their cases,” he said.
A total of 18,078 students attained a mean grade of B+ out of which 10,370 are males and 7,708 are females. 36,828 candidates scored a B plain while a total of 59,514 got B Minus as 78,343 got a C+which is a University cutoff.
