On Saturday, November 2, a devastating incident occurred at a church in the Palabek Refugee Settlement Site in Uganda, where worshippers gathered for prayers were struck by lightning.
The Uganda Police Force confirmed the tragic event, which resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals and injuries to 34 others. The authorities reported that they were still in the process of identifying the victims, highlighting the chaotic nature of the aftermath
“On November 2, 2024, in Lamwo District there was an incident where lightning struck 14 people to death and left 34 others injured. The incident happened during a prayer service at a church in Zone 8, Block 2. in Palabek settlement camp. The victims, yet to be identified, had gathered for prayers when the rain started around 5pm, and the lightning struck at 5.30pm,” recorded a police report
Witnesses described a scene of panic and confusion as the lightning struck, causing immediate fear among those present. Emergency services responded quickly, rushing the injured to Paluda Health Centre III for urgent medical attention.
The medical facility faced a surge in patients, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in such emergency situations. Local authorities are working to provide support to the victims’ families and ensure that those who were injured receive the necessary care.
